Arabo-European Mythology

General information

I’m an artist born in Belgium (La Hestre) from Moroccan parents. In earlier work I sometimes focused explicitly on the search for my cultural identity. When I was younger, I felt that as a Moroccan Belgian I missed a Belgian memory and a Moroccan future. E.g. in different installations under the title ‘Invasif’ I brought together typical Arabic and typical Belgian elements, personal and collective memories, subjective and objective documentation.

At this moment I’m doing research for a new artistic project: ‘Arabo-European Mythology’.

This project will consist of a series of films, together with related sculptures, performances, paintings, photographs, drawings, artist’s books and objects. These series will form the heart of different constellations of sculptural installations, and they are conceived as a process to create a kind of new memories. I want to create the missing imaginary world where the Arabic and Europeanculture are one; a world where this fiction is real and this reality a fiction.

‘Arabo-European Mythology’ is an art project and a “self-enclosed mythological system”. My conceptual departure point is the creation of a new mythology that wants to assimilate the European mythology and the Arabic history, Arabic fictions and European cultures,… as well as the creation of an artistic form that plays with both aesthetics.

I will look beyond mythology as a way to explore the creation of form, employing narrative models from both realms/cultures, such as biography, history, literature, philosophy, architecture,…

For me this is an indirect way of thinking about a few questions I (and the world) am/are occupied with, such as:

“What to do now with the fact that the Western culture is exhausted and that the Arabic world finds itself in a historical impasse?”

“Can imagination and art still contribute to fighting against new cultural stereotype and clichés?”

“How to produce a new kind of exoticism where the other is inside and not outside, and where strangers are a mirror for yourself?”
